new year's eve party planning

The holiday season is among us and with that comes a new year! Some are happy to see this year end while others are sad to see such a great year go. In the midst of your New Year’s resolution planning, you should consider what you need to throw an unforgettable New Year’s Eve party that your friends and families won’t forget. Tell your friends to blow off spending countless amounts of money at Downtown San Diego New Year’s Eve events and to enjoy kicking off the New Year in your San Diego home. With these tips, you can expect your friends and family to have a great time in the comfort of your home.

If you haven’t already, it’s time to raid your local Party City, Dollar Tree, Target or another favorite store for decorations. You can go with the cheesy “Happy New Year” banners along with balloons and basically anything gold or silver. You can also go with a theme for the entire night. Some ideas include masquerades, a costume party, 20’s theme, old Hollywood, or just use your imagination!

You can find paper plates, cups and tablecloths to match your NYE theme. Included with your decorations should be streamers, confetti, string lights and even a DIY photo backdrop. This backdrop can be made easily with some sparkly black fabric from your local fabric store. You can also get some photo props like funny sunglasses, hats, boas to make the photo spot more fun. You can also create a custom hashtag and put it on a sign to take a picture with, and then, of course, your guests will use this hashtag on their photos for everyone to look at later. If you have the time, take a look at some DIY decorations for an, even more, original New Year’s theme.

You can plan your drinks in a few different ways. The first is to provide a variety of different already made drinks like beer, wine, and champagne, go open bar style by providing liquor and mixers for your guests to mix themselves, or you can plan ahead and serve only certain drinks that match your theme, or that you particularly enjoy making. For example, at the beginning of the night, you can plan to serve a martini recipe and when the ball drops, plan to have champagne ready to toast to the New Year. Whatever you decide to provide your guests with, make sure there are non-alcoholic options and enough to serve your guests throughout the night.

FoodNew Year's Eve Party appetizers

Food is an important component when it comes to hosting a great New Year’s Eve Party in San Diego. Be prepared to have a variety of food to serve throughout the evening, and most importantly, don’t run out! There’s nothing worse than having people drink alcohol in your home and not to have any food to soak it up with. If you want to make your own food, prepare to make some tasty appetizers like a cheese ball, salsa, mini pizzas, meatballs and others. Here are some ideas for you to choose from. You can also choose to cater your party from your favorite local restaurants like Buona Forchetta in South Park for pizza, or Pittman Brown BBQ catering in Del Cerro.

You should also have some dessert options handy for all your guests with a sweet tooth. Pick up some cookies or mini brownies from your local grocery store or bake your own with recipe ideas here.

Plan a Playlist

Entertaining your guests is the most important factor when planning a fun New Year’s Eve party. First things first, make sure you have a playlist and speakers to play the best songs of 2017 to say goodbye to the year. This can be a fun way to say goodbye to all of the songs you are tired of hearing on the radio this year.

Cards to Fill Out to Say Goodbye to 2017 and 2018 Predictions

Another entertainment option is to have a card for your guests to fill out describing all their favorite memories of the year. You can hang a string up somewhere and have each of the cards hole-punched so they can be hung up afterward for everyone to see. Your guests can take them home at the end of the night!

Some ideas for your guests to describe 2017:

  • My favorite song this year was __________
  • My favorite day this year was __________
  • The goals I achieved this year were:_______
  • The goals I didn’t achieve were:_________

And then on the backside, have your guests fill out what they want to happen in 2018.

  • My top three goals for 2018 are: __________
  • A prediction I have for 2018 is: _______
  • A skill I want to learn this year is: _____
  • The bad habit I want to kick this year is: _______

Another entertainment option to consider is karaoke! You can rent karaoke machines from various places across San Diego, or just purchase a microphone you can plug into a speaker and then stream karaoke videos from YouTube on your TV. This is always a fun activity to have at parties.

Midnight Preparation

Lastly, to prepare for the end of the year, you should have party poppers, noisemakers, party hats, crowns, glasses and all the cheesy 2018 attire to ring in the New Year. Make sure to also have your TV on to broadcast the dropping of the ball in New York (although we see it 4 hours late).

Enjoy Your Party

The most important thing to remember when throwing a New Year’s Eve party is to take time to enjoy it and the company of your guests. It’s important to be a good hostess, but it’s also important to enjoy yourself.
