Fire Safety Tips

By in Home Maintenance with 0 Comments

October in San Diego is a great time. Haunted houses, spacious beach days…it also brings one nasty friend along: fire season. Regardless of the time of year, it’s always a good time to think about how you can protect yourself and your home from fire.

Thankfully, there are many proactive steps you can take to prevent fire in and around your home. Let’s start with the inside.

Inside your home

First up, give your smoke detectors a check. An easy trick? Test each unit every time change. When cooking, always turn your pot handles in and don’t leave open flames unattended. This may sound like a no brainer but when you’re trying to remember the next step in your recipe, it’s an easy mistake to make. Don’t forget to blow out candles when not in use. Make sure they’re on a solid surface where they won’t be easily knocked over, and safely out of reach from children and pets.

Outside your home

Make careful choices when planning your landscaping. Consider fire-resistant plants that also fit the drought-resistant category. Create what is known as defensible space, placing vegetation further away from your home to help prevent the spread of fire. Regularly clean your gutters and remove dead leaves and branches near your chimney (better yet, everywhere around your property).

Be prepared

Assemble an emergency supply kit with water, important medications, nonperishable food items, and a first aid kit. You’ll also want a flashlight, portable radio, and extra batteries. An emergency supply kit list can start to stack up quickly, but don’t let yourself feel overwhelmed. The City of San Diego suggests this list of what to keep in your kit.

You and your family should also have a plan of action in case of emergency. Study your evacuation routes and designate an emergency meeting location. Ready.gov has a great guide on how you can put together a full family disaster plan.
